• Stash Happy Applique

Stash Happy Applique by Cynthia Shaffer (Lark Crafts, 2012) features 25 unique project ideas and offers techniques for each. There is a basics section to help the novice sewers get up to speed.

Then the fun really begins, with projects that range from embellished store-bought items (like cute Mary Jane shoes) to 100% original creations. Even the motifs offer lots of variety, including kid’s drawings, coffee cups, and pretty paisley. How-to photography, templates, and tips speed crafters along their way.

  • {free pattern} Breakfast Club Apron

Originally featured in Where Women Cook, this apron pattern from Kimberbell Designs (of DIY Dish fame) is a free download.

The longer apron panel is pieced (oh the possibilities!) and has a cute fabric flower to add a little pizzazz to it. You could also add a little pocket or two. Cute!

What fabric would you want to make it with?

  • Three Feminine Aprons by Kwik Sew

Kwik Sew 3396 is a feminine apron with a retro flare. This pattern is designed for woven fabrics and would look great in today’s quilting cotton. Purchase bias tape for View B or make your own. The half apron (View C) features rick rack around the bottom and pockets. Buy this pattern and the supplies you need to sew it, at your local independent quilt and fabric retailer.

  • {tutorial} Sweet Ruffle Apron

Over on Sew, Mama, Sew, I saw this guest post from Christen (of Love Elaine) featuring her sweet half-apron with ruffled edge. Her tutorial is well-written and easy to understand. If you are looking for a quick gift or a new take on a familiar design, check it out. She even teaches you how to make the lovely flower embellishment (which you could use on all sorts of other projects!).

Christen is giving away the apron from this tutorial to one lucky reader at Love Elaine; visit for a chance to win! You can also purchase a Love Elaine apron or other handmade gifts in Christen’s shop with a 15% off coupon through March 1 (code “SewMamaSew15”).

  • {tutorial} Ruffled Valentine Apron

Made with love-themed and red/white fabrics, this ruffled half apron is sweet enough for the upcoming St. Valentine’s holiday! Check out Morgan’s One More Moore blog for the tutorial.

It would adorable using some of Deb Strain’s Always & Forever collection from Moda Fabrics.

Or the new Heart Garden by Robin Zingone for Robert Kaufman Fabrics. Check out your favorite independent quilt and fabric retailer to find these and other great fabrics for Valentine’s Day projects.

  • Pieced Red & White Apron

Sue at Sew What’s New made her own half apron pattern from an apron her grandmother had. She used a bold red polka dot with crisp white and pieced this apron in strips. Pretty Neat!

Find fabric for this apron at your local independent quilt and fabric retailer.

On the day before Thanksgiving, women across the country will be celebrating the day by wrapping a loaf of bread in an apron, tucking a prayer or a note of encouragement in the pocket, and then delivering the bundle to someone in need of physical or spiritual sustenance—or both. What could be nicer than receiving such a gift—and handmade at that?
